Mountain Equipment Co-op Edmonton

Mountain Equipment Co-op has been an institution in Canada for decades.  They recently relocated to new premises in the Brewery District, Edmonton.  I took a series of exterior and interior images of the new building for the architects.

Parker at Ten

On May 05 our golden retriever Parker will be ten years old.  This photo was taken in the autumn of her first year with us.  Because of her name people sometimes think she's a boy; her name was suggested by our neighbour who, because we live in Parkview, thought our pup should be Princess Parker of Parkview.  And that was that.

She was born in a big barn in Yorkshire, England and is the second dog we have acquired from the same breeder.  In the files of The Kennel Club (UK) and the Canadian Kennel Club she is registered as Gloi Heavens Promise.  Gloi is the breeders registered kennel name and Terri suggested the Heavens Promise part.  By any name, she's a perfect dog and ascended to the role of Queen of the House years ago.

Tenth Anniversary - A Look Back

From time to time in 2018 I will present a photo from the first year of Jim Dobie Photography. This Photo was taken on 2008 August 24. It was made with my venerable Canon 40D with a Sigma 10-20 zoom lens. ISO 100, f/22 at 1/10 of a second.  The building was photographed for the architects.

Ed Sullivan Theatre

As we waited in line to attend a taping of 'the Late Show with Stephen Colbert' it occurred to me that the stage of the Ed Sullivan Theatre has probably hosted more famous people from all walks of life than any other stage in the world.  It first opened in 1927 and was known as the Hammerstein Theatre.  CBS obtained a lease on the theatre in 1936 and used it for radio broadcasts. It was converted for television in 1950 at which time it was renamed CBS-TV Radio 50.  In the 1960s it was one of televisions busiest stages, The Ed Sullivan show was broadcast from here as was the Merv  Griffin Show, The Jackie Gleason Show, and others.  In 1965 it was renovated for colour television and in 1967 CBS renamed the theatre in honour of Ed Sullivan after his 20th anniversary show,  The CBS lease on the building expired in 1981 but in 1993 CBS bought the building and it became the home of the Late Show with David Letterman.  Stephen Colbert assumed the role of host after Letterman left in 2015.

World Trade Centre 911 Memorial

World Trade Centre 1, sometimes referred to has the North Tower, featured a communications antenna that, to me, always looked like a thin, needle like apparatus that was a touch out of scale with the giant towers.  In fact it was a giant of a thing that of course came crashing down when the towers were destroyed in the 2001 terrorist attacks.  Today, what's left of it is on display in the 911 memorial in New York

If you're looking for typical New York thing to do a trip to Zabar's might be in order.  If they don't have it you probably can't eat it.

Empire State Building

When I was kid we had this set of books in the house that resembled encyclopedias.  They were called the 'Books of Knowledge'.  I don't know how many times I looked at the pages describing the Empire State Building which was, at the time the books were published, the tallest building in the world; status it held from the time of completion in 1931 until the north tower of the World Trade Centre claimed the title in 1970.  When the WTC towers fell following terrorist attack in 2001 the Empire State Building reclaimed the title of tallest building in New York until completion of the One World Trade Centre tower in 2012.

This is the view from the 86th floor observation deck looking south toward lower Manhattan.  The 102nd floor observation deck was closed on the day of our visit.
